A new study finds that sildenafil, or Viagra, may reduce the risk of strokes.
The researchers, based on data from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, reviewed data from 10,000 people who took sildenafil for two years, at a dose of 50 mg, to six times a day. Participants were followed up at 3, 6 and 12 months. The results showed a slight increase in the chance of stroke in those who took sildenafil, but not in those who took Viagra. The increase in stroke risk was not statistically significant, although it was statistically significant in the group who took the dose of 50 mg.
This makes the researchers cautious about using the data, although the research team cautioned that such a large number of patients is likely to increase the risk of stroke.
“Our results do not necessarily mean that the risk of stroke is greater for patients taking sildenafil than they are for patients who do not,” said the researcher. “The researchers need to be cautious about using these results as a basis for comparison to other studies.”
The researchers noted that the study did not include a sample size of people who took Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs, such as sildenafil. In an editorial in theAmerican Journal of Clinical Oncology, Dr. Jane Smith, professor of medicine at New York University, highlighted some of the concerns that led the researchers. Smith told The Associated Press that her research group is studying the effect of Viagra on blood pressure, heart disease, and other diseases.
“This study is important because it suggests that sildenafil, and other drugs that interact with sildenafil, may decrease the risk of stroke,” she wrote. “However, it also raises questions about the relationship between sildenafil and stroke.”
The study was funded by Eli Lilly and Company, which is one of the companies that makes Viagra. The other companies include Johnson & Johnson and Sanofi-Aventis, which is one of the largest erectile dysfunction drugmakers.
In its editorial inThe New England Journal of MedicineElizabeth Kavaler, an assistant professor at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, warned that people with diabetes may be more at risk for strokes than they are.
“It is unknown whether the increased risk is due to diabetes or other factors. However, if sildenafil is not taken as prescribed, there could be other factors that could be interacting with sildenafil,” she wrote.
In an email toElizabeth Kavaler, an assistant professor of medicine at New York University, warned that people with diabetes may be more at risk for strokes than they are.
Kavaler said she had not seen any studies comparing Viagra and sildenafil, but she noted that the research was small and “unclear” whether the drugs were similar.
