A new study finds that the popular brand-name medication Viagra contains the same active ingredient as the popular brand-name drug Cialis®.
The research, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, was presented at a meeting of the American Psychological Association’s American Psychological Association (AZA) Society in San Francisco on Tuesday, Aug. 15.
Viagra and Cialis, the generic versions of Viagra and Cialis, are FDA-approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. However, their approval for the treatment of the more serious conditions, such as pulmonary arterial hypertension, is subject to several delays due to a possible increased risk for cardiovascular events, which are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality.
“The drug Viagra works by relaxing blood vessels, increasing blood flow, and making it easier for the heart to pump blood,” said Dr. Robert W. Healy, a professor of psychiatry at Northwestern University, and coauthor of the study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
Dr. Healy noted that Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men with high blood pressure and that Cialis, which contains tadalafil, is an FDA-approved treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension, but it is not approved by AZA for this purpose.
“We know that Viagra is not as safe as Cialis, but we don’t know yet whether it will work for the condition or not,” he added.
The researchers studied more than 7,000 men from five states in the U. S. and compared their health records with those of 20,000 men in the U. All were treated with Viagra or Cialis and took the medication for the same length of time. They also compared the results with those from a 20-state study of 2,200 men.
The researchers found that men who were taking Viagra or Cialis were 1.4 times more likely to experience erectile dysfunction, compared to those who were not taking Viagra or Cialis.
They compared the results of those who were taking Viagra or Cialis with those who were taking Viagra or Cialis alone, or with those taking Viagra or Cialis alone, but did not take Viagra or Cialis.
They also found that those who took Viagra or Cialis did not have more heart failure, a serious condition known as left ventricular dysfunction.
Researchers found that people who took Viagra or Cialis for the first time were more likely to have pulmonary arterial hypertension, and those who took Viagra or Cialis for the first time were more likely to have pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The researchers note that the side effects of Viagra and Cialis are similar and that the drug’s side effects are not common to those taking them.
“This new study has a long-term goal,” he said. “We’re hoping that these results will continue to be published in the coming years.”

Viagra and Cialis are available in the U. as brand-name drugs and are approved by the FDA to treat erectile dysfunction. Cialis is approved for use in men, and the medication is approved to treat the condition by the FDA. Cialis also is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, and it is FDA-approved for this use.
